Plain-language grant guidance
Does a church need DGR status for grants?
Not always. DGR endorsement is program-specific and is different from charity registration or income-tax exemption.
Read the applicant rules literally. Some programs require DGR Item 1, some accept registered charities or incorporated not-for-profits, and some permit an auspice.
Four things people confuse
ABN, incorporation, ACNC registration and DGR endorsement answer different questions.
- ABN identifies an entity
- Incorporation creates a legal structure
- ACNC registration gives charity status
- DGR endorsement concerns tax-deductible gifts
If the applicant is not a DGR
Do not rule the opportunity in or out from memory. Check the program and any auspice clause.
- Search the ABR for current endorsement
- Confirm the exact DGR category required
- Ask whether auspicing is accepted
- Allow time for an auspice agreement
